Discovering Paris: A Comprehensive Guide to My Favorite Spots
I just got back home after spending two incredible months in Paris, and I can’t wait to share my top Paris recommendations with you. From the best places to stay and must-see spots to the hidden gems only locals know about, I’ve got it all covered.
First, a little disclaimer—I’m no expert, just someone who lived in Paris for two months and fell in love with the city. So, these are my personal favorites.
Where to Stay
During my two months in Paris, I experienced two very different neighborhoods, or arrondissements. Each had its unique charm.
The 11th Arrondissement
The first month, I stayed in the 11th arrondissement, a low-key, local area that felt removed from the tourist hustle and bustle. It was quiet, and I loved that. However, one downside was that it wasn’t close to the major attractions, so you might need to take the metro often. But if you’re someone who enjoys a quieter, more authentic Parisian experience, the 11th is perfect.
The 4th Arrondissement
The second month, I moved to the 4th arrondissement, and this is the area I would recommend to anyone visiting Paris. It’s right in the middle of everything, with a heavy concentration of cool spots to eat, hip cafes, and endless things to do. Most days, I found myself walking everywhere—no metro needed!.
Must-See Attractions
Luxembourg Gardens
This place is like a fantasy land. The beautiful gardens, the fountains where kids race sailboats, the serene lawn areas—it all felt so idyllic. I spent countless hours here, just soaking in the peaceful atmosphere
The Opéra Garnier
The Opera House is a must-see. It’s absolutely stunning, with chandeliers and intricate paintings everywhere. There’s one room that literally took my breath away when I walked in for the first time. I didn’t catch an opera show, but the building itself is worth a visit.
Sacré-Cœur Basilica
This is my absolute favorite spot in Paris. I could go there every night if I had the chance. The Basilica is perched on a hill, offering a killer view of the city, especially at sunset. It’s a magical place where locals and tourists alike gather on the lawn to take in the view..
Shakespeare and Company
This famous bookstore is a dream for any book lover. It’s one of the most iconic bookstores in the world, and it has a lovely cafe next door where I had some of the best key lime pie and coffee. You can spend hours browsing or just relaxing with a good book.
Arc de Triomphe
Sure, you’ve heard of it, but did you know you can climb to the top? For around 12 or 13 euros, you can get an amazing view of Paris from the top of the Arc. Just a heads up—there are a lot of stairs, and it’s a bit of a workout, but the view is worth every step.
Things to Do
Here are a few activities that I found particularly enjoyable during my stay.
Picnic at the Eiffel Tower
There’s something wonderfully rebellious about laying down a picnic blanket in the shadow of one of the world’s most iconic landmarks. It’s a reminder that in Paris, even the ordinary can feel extraordinary.
Bike Around Paris
Renting bikes and just riding around Paris was another highlight. There’s something magical about biking through the city with no specific destination, discovering hidden corners and beautiful streets along the way.
Seine River Cruise
If you can, take a Seine River cruise at night. The city lights up in the evening, and the view from the river is breathtaking. It’s an hour-long ride, and you’ll get to see some of the city’s most famous sights, including the Eiffel Tower as it sparkles.
Explore the Latin Quarter
The Latin Quarter is known for its vibrant nightlife. It’s a beautiful area to walk around, with lots of great restaurants and bars. I had an amazing Italian dinner there one night, followed by a stroll along the Seine—perfect for a relaxed evening out.
Marché des Enfants Rouges
This is the oldest market in Paris, and it’s a food lover’s paradise. I tried the most incredible Moroccan food here, complete with green tea that was out of this world. It’s a must-visit for anyone who loves to explore different cuisines
Wine and Cheese Tasting
You can’t leave Paris without doing a wine and cheese tasting. The quality of the wine and cheese in France is unmatched, and it’s such a fun way to experience a key part of French culture
Museums to Visit
Paris is known for its art, and while I couldn’t possibly visit every museum in two months, I have a few favorites.
Musée Rodin
This museum blew me away. The outdoor gardens are filled with stunning sculptures, and the mansion inside is equally impressive. It’s a peaceful, inspiring place that I highly recommend.
Musée de l’Orangerie
If you’re a fan of Monet, you can’t miss the Musée de l’Orangerie. This is where his famous Water Lilies are displayed, and it’s an experience that stays with you long after you leave
Where to Eat
Paris is a food lover’s dream, and I had some of the best meals of my life during these two months.
Le Relais de l’Entrecôte
This was hands down one of my favorite meals ever. The dish is simple—steak frites—but it’s cooked to perfection. And just when you think it’s over, they bring out a second serving. It’s a must-try.
Breizh Café
The best crêpes I’ve ever had were at Breizh Café. I kept coming back, trying both the sweet and savory crêpes, and they never disappointed. Don’t be afraid to try the savory options—they’re incredible..
Pink Mama
For Italian food lovers, Pink Mamma is a dream. The truffle pasta and the goat cheese pizza with honey and walnuts were unforgettable. Just make sure to get there early—this place is popular, and for good reason..
La Felicità
This vibrant food hall is a great spot for a fun night out. There’s live music, photo booths, and an amazing bar, all combined with delicious pasta dishes. The atmosphere is lively and energetic, making it a great place to hang out with friends..
Cafes and bakeries
One of the things I love most about Paris is the endless cafes and bakeries scattered around the city. My absolute favorite is “Du Pain et des Idées,” which translates to “Bread and Ideas” in English. If you love pastries, this bakery will be your downfall. Pistachio and chocolate croissants that melt in your mouth—need I say more?
Café Moco
This cozy café was a hidden gem near where I stayed in the 11th arrondissement. The brunch menu is fantastic, and their chocolate chip cookies are to die for. If you’re in the area, it’s a great spot to relax and enjoy a good meal.
Cozy Café
Right next to Rue Cler, this café is the perfect place to start your day. After breakfast, you can head next door to pick up supplies for a picnic by the Eiffel Tower. It’s all within walking distance in the 7th arrondissement.
Carette Café
Hot chocolate that will ruin you for any other. Pair it with a brunch that’s both hearty and delicious, and you’ve got the perfect start to your day.
Ladurée
No visit to Paris is complete without trying the famous macarons from Ladurée. I went there more times than I can count, and the macarons never failed to impress. It’s a must-visit for anyone with a sweet tooth.
Thrift Shopping
One of my favorite activities in Paris was thrift shopping. Here are a few spots that stood out.
Hippie Market
This store had an amazing selection of vintage clothing, especially for men. Everything was organized by color, making it easy to browse, and I found some fantastic pieces here.
Super Vintage
For a more curated, smaller thrift shop, Super Vintage was my go-to. It’s perfect for anyone who finds large stores overwhelming. I loved the intimate feel, and it was easier to find unique items..
Kilo Shop
If you’re up for a bit of a treasure hunt, Kilo Shop is worth a visit. It’s huge, and you pay by weight, so you can find some great deals if you’re willing to dig. Just be prepared—it can be overwhelming if you’re not used to big thrift stores.
Hidden Gems
Candelaria
One of my favorite discoveries in Paris was Candelaria. At first glance, it might seem like just a humble Mexican taco shop. But push open a hidden door at the back, and you’ll find yourself in a fantastic speakeasy bar. The tacos here are a surprising highlight, proving that Paris can do tacos just as well as it does croissants. The bar itself is beautifully designed, with a great selection of cocktails that perfectly complement the cozy, intimate setting. If you’re looking for a unique spot to unwind, Candelaria is definitely worth a visit
La Villette Outdoor Cinema
One of my favorite summer nights in Paris was spent at the outdoor cinema at La Villette. Movies under the stars in the summer. It’s more than just a cinema—it’s an experience that’s as much about the atmosphere as it is about the film.
Conclusion
Paris isn’t just a city; it’s a feeling, an adventure, a journey. I’ve shared my favorite spots, but there’s so much more to discover. So go out there, explore, and create your own Paris story. And if you ever need more tips or recommendations, you know where to find me.
